A sustainable rural society, where no poverty exists and people act responsibly toward the environment

On November 25, 2022, the Center for Rural Development in central Vietnam (CRD), Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, held the launching workshop of the project “Promoting the effective engagement of ethnic minorities (EMs) in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Emission Reduction Program (ER-P) through strengthening knowledge and capacity of EMs in REDD+ process”.

Overview of the workshop

The workshop was held with the participation of about 50 representatives from provincial and district-level Departments such as the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, Forest Protection Department, Protection forest management units, Women’s Unions, and community forest management groups. The objective of the workshop is to share information about the project with the community of beneficiaries and associated partners.

At the Workshop, Dr. Truong Quang Hoang, Director of CRD, gave an opening speech that mentioned factors that contribute to climate change, including greenhouse gas emissions, human production and consumption activities, deforestation, and forest degradation… In addition, he brought up the concerns of the international community and the Government of Vietnam regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the North Central region’s Emission Reduction Program.

The workshop is held to widely disseminate project information to the community of beneficiaries and stakeholders as well as to discuss and reach an agreement on the project implementation plan. The workshop covered the project’s activities in detail as well as the proposals and discussions about capacity building, REDD+ communication, and Emission Reduction Programs for ethnic minorities.

Many discussion points from the representatives regarding how ethnic minorities participate in the emission reduction programs or their capacity needed for participation were provided at the workshop. “Participants in REDD+ and the North Central region’s emission reduction program have rights and responsibilities that we have to understand the value and the importance of not relying on and developing the forest.” Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hien, Director of Thua Thien Hue Forest Protection and Development Fund, highlighted at the workshop.

The project “Promoting the effective engagement of ethnic minorities (EMs) in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Emission Reduction Program (ER-P) through strengthening knowledge and capacity of EMs in REDD+ process” is funded by the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) and implemented by CRD and the Indigenous Peoples’ International Centre for Policy Research and Education (Tebtebba).

Implemented in A Roang commune, A Luoi district, and Thuong Lo commune, Nam Dong district, in a 12-month implementation period, the project aims to “strengthen the participation of ethnic minority communities, especially women and young people, in planning, implementing, and making decisions related to Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) in Vietnam in the context of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic”.
